Rose Colors

What Do They Mean
And When To Give Roses

Rose colors may not hold much meaning to you other than the fact that they look nice. However, while it may not mean much to you it may mean everything to the person you are giving flowers to. I did some research on what the different colors mean. Here is what I found...

There is a common belief that certain rose colors mean certain things, so the roses you give also carry a message in their color.

Not only do the colors carry different messages, the number of flowers you give also have significance.

It may not mean as much to you but knowing the differences can mean the world to the receiver of your flowers. Here is a list of what the different colors mean, gathered from various online sources.

How Many / What Kind

    One dozen (12)
This is the traditional message of love and gratitude

    Two dozen (24)
When you give this many for a romantic gift it doubles the meaning. It says "I'm yours".

    Long stemmed roses
A single long stemmed rose can mean "I love you" or "thank you". A dozen long stemmed are often the most desired romantic gift you can give and can mean "I will always remember you".

    Petite
These are known as the sweetheart rose, perfect for a sweetheart

When To Give Roses

You don't need a reason to give flowers. With very few exceptions the flowers that you give "just because" will probably mean more than the flowers you give when it's expected that you'll give them.

Do not ever give flowers to make up for something you did wrong. Never ever. You see this all the time on television but television is not reality. If you give flowers to make up for something you did wrong you attach the wrong meaning to giving flowers. Not a good idea.

If you give flowers because you screwed up, the next time you give her flowers she wonders what you did wrong. You don't want them to carry that meaning. Receiving flowers should make her happy.

The only times you should give flowers...

  • To express your love

  • To celebrate something good happening

  • Her birthday

  • Your anniversary

  • Valentines day

  • Just becasue you know she likes them

There are many websites out there with a lot more good information about roses and flowers but you shouldn't really need much more than this. Once you find a good florist you like they will be the best resource you'll ever need for information about giving flowers. If they know their business they will be happy to (and want to) educate you about giving flowers. Often.
