Fly a Kite!

Let The Romance Soar!

Fly a kite! How long has it been since you've done this?! If you have to think about it, it's been too long! Combine this fun date idea with a picnic and you'll have a fun, creative date afternoon outside.

Kites have been around for about 2,800 years, first becoming popular in China when they were made from silk and bamboo. These days you can still find kites made from silk and bamboo, but you're more likely to find tyvek, polyester, or nylon over a carbon, fiberglass, or wood frame.

Romantic Date IdeaYou can get started with this inexpensive date idea for as little as a few dollars or even less at a dollar store. While those $4 kites might be good for kids, if you want to get some real enjoyment out of it I suggest you upgrade to something a little more sturdy and reliable.

You can find a great beginners kite online for about $15 that flies great in light wind and it comes with enough line to have a blast. Upgrade to 500 feet of line and a better kite for about $50 and you have something you'll use over and over.

You know how this works...

Find yourself a wide open space with no power lines - an empty ball field or the park or even a parking lot - where you can safely fly a kite.

Check the weather. Overcast and breezy works good because you aren't staring into the bright sunny sky the whole time. All you need is a 5 to 20 mph wind with a beginners kite.

Pack your kite, a couple bottles of water (or beverage of choice) or better yet, pack a whole picnic lunch and eat after you have fun with the kite. Don't forget the sun glasses and camera.

This is a nice, fun date idea all on it's own, and even better when combined with a romantic picnic date. Flying a kite is also an inexpensive way to spend a few hours getting to know someone with a love of the outdoors. A great outdoor date.
