Drive In Theater

Classic Date Night Location

Drive In Theater (drive-in movie) is still a classic place for a romantic date night together. I consider this a great fun date and creative date idea as well.

There are still many drive-in theaters open in the USA plus several in Canada. You can even find them in India and Australia.

My closest theater (opened in 1949) has 4 big screens each showing two features each night for just $8 per adult and $5 on Tuesday and Wednesday. Compare this to regular movie theaters and I believe you have yourself a unique and affordable date idea.

Romantic Date IdeaThe drive-in's peak popularity came in the late 1950s and early 1960s with 4,000 to 5,000 drive-ins spreading across the United States.

There are only about 500 still open around the world, 375 or so in the USA. With not nearly as many theaters as there used to be, finding one open is a special treat.

Good Eats!

Concession stands are where they make most of their money, so you'll find the concessions becoming more and more creative to draw and keep customers. One way to show your support of the drive in theater is to eat at the concession stand.

Sure, you can still get popcorn and a soda. Now you can also find chili dogs, specialty sandwiches, foods made fresh to order, ice cream, and many other treats. You can optionally save yourself a few dollars and pack your own picnic meal and snacks. I am fond of my favorite appetizers from my favorite restaurants, as long as it isn't too crunchy so I can hear the movie.

As always, on a romantic date you want to be prepared so bring a blanket to snuggle together. If you have bucket seats you might want to consider borrowing someone's late model vehicle with a bench seat so you can sit close. Yes!

On a really nice night I've seen pickup trucks back into a spot with lounge chairs in the back for the relaxed movie watchers. Many locations also have outside sitting areas so you can bring the lounge chairs and relax outside on a nice summer night.

What's In Your Area...

I found a good list on Wikipedia which lists at least one open theater in each US State except Alaska, Delaware, and Louisiana - and more than thirty theaters in Canada, one in India, and a link for Australia.

Some people think the drive in theater is making a comeback. I say as long as there is a drive in within driving distance I'm going to make a point to pack up the vehicle and take my girl for a night out at the drive in.
