Dating Services

Creating Connections Since The 60s

Dating services were very popular when I was growing up. In the 60s and 70s computer dating was one of the most popular offline options. The services seem to have advanced as quickly as the technology they use to match potential daters. Computer dating of the 60s and 70s was followed by video and phone services in the 80s and 90s. These days the services seem to have either become more sophisticated or they have simplified the process and made it something as simple as setting up a lunch date.

Who is looking for you?

I admit it, in my single days I experimented with my own personal ad in the singles section in the back of one of those freebie newspapers in town. I had a few blind dates, and while nothing came of it, it was a good option that took away the pressure of asking a stranger for a date. They were looking for me as much as I was looking for them.

Dating ServicesWhat usually works in conventional dating is you find someone who shares some interest you have. This builds instant rapport, and the time you spend sharing your interest is when you develop the trust and attraction to each other. This is why so many people meet at work. Offline dating works.

When you join you get to list your interests and let the service match you up with those who share that interest with you. Most of the services I am familiar with work on a local basis so that will limit you to only those in your city or town or area. Except for unusual circumstances, you probably aren't looking for a date in another city anyway. Of course, by staying offline you'll attract that offline crowd and may miss those who have profiles online. This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on your circumstances. I've had experiences where I was contacted by someone who seemed like the type I'd like to get to know only to find out that they lived clear across the country. With a local service you probably won't have to deal with that kind of issue.

There are dating services in all sizes, shapes, and colors serving many interests. If you have an interest, check out the yellow pages or use your favorite computer search engine and find what is in your area.

Did you know... Singapore's largest dating service, Social Development Unit (SDU) is the world's only government-run dating system.

There are online offline services you can check out that will help you set up local connections...

It's Just Lunch - a dating service franchise that serves busy professionals by setting up after work lunch and/or drink dates.

Matchmaker International - a Michigan dating company serving Michigan since 1982.
